Frequently Asked Questions
Ren'Py stores save files in two places: in the folder you launch your game from under game/saves, and in a "global" folder whose location varies by operating system:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\RenPy\[GameName] - MacOS:
~/Library/RenPy/[GameName] - Linux:
~/.renpy/[GameName]
Save files have a .save extension and are named with a pattern like 1-1-LT1.save or auto-1.save.
After downloading your edited save file:
- Navigate to your game's save directory (see "Where do I find my Ren'Py save files?" above)
- Rename the downloaded file to match an existing save slot, e.g.
1-1-LT1.save, or use a new slot number. The number before the hyphen is the page the save file shows up on and the number after the hyphen is the slot within that page - Place the file in the save directory
- Restart your game
Pro tip: Keep your original save as a backup in case something goes wrong!
This tool is absolutely safe. It runs entirely in your browser - no data is uploaded to any servers, so your save files never leave your computer.
The editor creates a new modified save file rather than overwriting your original, and it uses an algorithm that is designed to minimize the changes made to your saves. But we highly recommend:
- Backing up your original save files before editing
- Placing downloaded saves in a separate save slot
While the editor always produces valid save files, some changes can have unintended consequences: for example, making your character's name really long could make it overflow the textbox.

You can edit any variable stored in a Ren'Py save file, including:
- Character stats (affection, relationship points, etc.)
- Player resources (money, items, energy)
- Story flags and route choices
- Unlocked content and achievements
- Boolean switches (true/false values)
- Any custom variables the game developer created
The editor automatically detects variable types (strings, numbers, booleans) and provides appropriate editing controls.
Yes! This editor works with save files from any Ren'Py game, regardless of version. Ren'Py uses a consistent save file format across versions, so whether you're playing a game made in 2015 or 2025, the editor can read and modify the saves.
If a variable doesn't appear in the editor, it could be because:
- The developer didn't save it - some values are calculated on-the-fly while the game is running
- It's stored under a different name than you expect (try the search bar)
- It's nested inside a Python object that isn't editable
- The variable is created later in the game and doesn't exist yet in your save
Use the search function to look for partial matches, and try the "Modified only" filter to track which variables you've changed as you edit.
